Should NMN be on our list of Essential Supplements?

0

From the dawn of time, people have been searching for that fountain of youth elixir, a way of staying and feeling young, of living forever. While there is no magic potion and, as far as we know, scientists have yet to invent a time machine, researchers are discovering some anti-ageing supplements may be able to actually help slow down or reverse the signs of ageing.

There’s a current wave of hype surrounding nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) for their claimed anti-ageing properties and an NMN supplement for promoting NAD+ production.

In this article, we examine the research behind the NMN phenomena and why health-conscious consumers are looking to buy NMN in Australia.

What is NMN?

NMN is a naturally-occurring molecule classified as a bioactive nucleotide and a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and essentially a driving force in the body’s production of NAD+, which is supposedly involved in multiple biological ageing processes and gene expression. In other words, some scientists reckon it can reverse the ageing process. And there is some weight to the theory if you reverse engineer what’s happening in the body when NAD production is low.  An NAD+ deficiency can lead to potential health issues such as metabolic disorders, mental conditions, and neurodegenerative, age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s. So, a surplus in the supply chain promotes the opposite, right?

NMNappears in tiny amounts in animal and plant food sources, including the so-called super-foods broccoli, avocados, and cucumbers. These foods contain the B vitamin, niacin, and an enzyme called (the amazingly long-winded) nicotinamide phosphoribosytransferase (NAMPT.)

The ageing process can cause body tissue levels of NAD+ declining leading to disruption between energy production and energy consumption. Levels of NAD+ are not only increased by diet or supplements. For older adults in has been demonstrated that physical activity in the shape of exercise or work-related movement can increase levels of NAD+ naturally. A 2019 study showed positive results on older adults NAD+ levels after twelve weeks of aerobic and cardio exercise.

Does this all mean we should be looking to find a good online deal for NMN or other supplements?

Benefits of NMN

Once we reach middle-age our NAD+ levels have dropped significantly to around half of the level of our youth. Numerous studies in animals have demonstrated that boosting NAD+ levels increase insulin sensitivity and reverses mitochondrial dysfunction.

So, what are the major benefits of an NMN supplement?

The major benefits observed in research include:

  • Energy Boost. By increasing NAD+ levels mitochondrial function is also improved. Mitochondria is the engine room of cell production and overall energy production.
  • Anti-Aging. Animal studies have suggested that NMN supplementation improves muscle function, and cognitive function, and might increase lifespan.
  • Metabolic Health. By regulating blood sugar levels and improving insulin sensitivity NMN may be beneficial for individuals for those who have or are at risk of developing diabetes.
  • Neuroprotection. By protecting neurons from damage and supporting brain health NMN can potentially reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
  • Cardiovascular Health. Some studies suggest a reduced risk of heart disease and improved vascular function following a course of NMN supplements.
  • Weight Management. NMN could help regulate metabolism and fat storage leading to obesity prevention.

With all the above in mind and a government drive to improve our health should NMN be on our list of essential supplements? The evidence looks good, but we’ll let you decide.
