Your Guide to Maryland Marijuana Laws

0

The public perception of marijuana has come a long way from the days of Cheech and Chong movies. Today, more than two-thirds of Americans are in favor of legalizing this incredibly popular drug. Not all states have caught up with public opinion, however.

If you’re in Maryland and interested in partaking in cannabis, then it’s important to know where the government stands on it. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Maryland marijuana laws!

Medical Cannabis Options

Like many states in the US, Maryland makes an exception to its marijuana laws for people who require cannabis for medicinal purposes. The law went into effect in 2014, and it permits cannabis farmers and dispensaries to provide marijuana to patients who have a referral from their doctors.

In order to receive a referral from your doctor, you must have received a diagnosis of a qualifying medical condition. Common conditions include anorexia, chronic pain, PTSD, and glaucoma. If you have one of these conditions, you can purchase up to a 30-day supply of marijuana at a time, but you cannot purchase edibles.

The Low-Down on Recreational Cannabis

Recreational marijuana has not yet been legalized in Maryland, but there’s more to the story.

At this time, people who are caught with less than ten grams of marijuana will not face criminal charges, but they will still face civil liability in the form of fines. First-time offenders may be charged a fine of up to $100. People who have been caught with ten grams or less of marijuana three or more times can be fined up to $500.

If you are under the age of 21, however, you will still have to appear in court for the offense. The judge has the discretion to order you to enter into drug treatment. The same is true for people who have been charged with possession three or more times, but they may be ordered to enter into a substance abuse program.

Is There Potential for Marijuana Legalization?

A ballot initiative is in place for the November 2022 election that would allow voters to choose whether the state should legalize marijuana. Research has demonstrated that the majority of Maryland residents support the legalization of marijuana, and this legislation would help Maryland keep up with other states who have already legalized it.

Protect Yourself by Staying on Top of Maryland Marijuana Laws

Maryland marijuana laws may not be as liberal as those found in states like Colorado and California, but they’re not as strict as laws in more conservative states. Thankfully, there is potential for recreational marijuana to become legal in the next few years if current legislation is successful.
